Feast of Ideas Week 9 - Franz Liszt

Franz Liszt….the famous pianist. The first words to Beethoven’s Wig Hungarian Rhapsody #2 summarize this week’s composer perfectly. Franz was a child prodigy, performing and composing his own music by the age of 9. He and his father toured all over Europe, giving performances for both musicians and kings. Besides being an amazing pianist, Liszt had an unbelievable ability to create music on the spot, often using melody suggestions from audience members!

Liszt’s life was filled with highs and lows. At age 15, he lost his father (low) which devastated Franz so much, he contemplated giving up music as a career. He did return to music, using his music and performances to raise money for charity and humanitarian causes (high). His love life was tumultuous, being involved with and influenced by a variety of women (low). But his musical genius influenced fellow musicians, students, and future generations (high).
