Unit Study - Elephants

I love The Carnival of the Animals.  Each song represents an animal.  It is fun and whimsical.  One of the easiest animals to recognize in this collection is the Elephant.  I had so much fun create a wide variety of activities all centered around Elephants.  Why not combine fun activities with a little bit of learning?

Music

Using L’Elephant from Carnival of the Animals of Saint-Saens, have children practice their listening skills.  Expose them to this delightful piece of music.  Who knew Elephants could be so whimsical?

In this video, I will lead your child through an introductory listening activity.

In this video, I will demonstrate how you can listen to one piece of music several times, making it fun and engaging each time, using art, dance and crafts.

Arts & Crafts

Want to make an elephant craft?  All you need is an empty milk carton, glue, and some tissue paper.  Listen to the music as you make your own elephant craft.

Poetry

Here is a fun poem my children enjoyed memorizing about an elephant and the telephone.  Eletelephony by Laura Elizabeth Richards.

Read along with us as we read Mo Willems’ book, Waiting is Hard.  An excellent book about Elephant learning to wait.

Science

We took this week to learn two facts about Elephants, they are herbivores and their babies are called calves.  In this video, we do a science activity and play a game to help reinforce those facts.

Thank you for joining me and I hope you found some fun and helpful ideas to do with your family.
