Composer Study - Stephen Foster

Stephen Foster

'Tis the song, the sigh of the weary,

Hard Times, hard times, come again no more.

Stephen Foster (1826 - 1864) I31 was an American composer in the romantic period. He wrote many classic American folk songs like Oh Susanna, Beautiful Dreamer, and Swanee River. Though his music was used in minstrel shows (an actor in blackface makeup to portray racial stereotypes), he eventually moved onto parlor music. Though many of his songs are about the South, he had never lived there, visiting only once. He is now known as the first "real American composer".
