Feast of Ideas Week 11 - Georges Bizet

Georges Bizet was born in Paris in 1838. He was a Romantic composer best known for his famous opera, Carmen. As a young student, he showed great promise - winning prizes like the Prix de Rome and even impressing Franz Liszt by playing one of Liszt’s most difficult compositions flawlessly in front of Liszt himself! His career began to stall out, both performing and composing. He attempted to create operas and while he was met with some success, his career still failed to take off. He served in the Franco Prussian war in 1870, composed an opera in March, 1875 but then died three months later. He never got to realize the success of Carmen, his final and most successful opera.
