2021 Christmas Gift Ideas for the Music Student in your life

Are you looking for a gift for the music student in your life? Here are several gift ideas for this Christmas season.

Piano Music

Does your student have a favorite song? Favorite movie? Try to find the sheet music for them to play. Try to find the right level. If they are a new and young beginner, look for 5 finger melodies. If they are a slightly older beginner (older elementary, middle schooler, or higher), try Easy Piano arrangements. Ask their music teacher for suggestions for the level of difficulty. Though, if the student likes the song, they will probably be motivated to work on the piece even if it is slightly harder than normal.

SheetMusicPlus is a great website for finding a singular song or for a genre book.

Faber Piano Adventures is the go to in my piano studio. Faber & Faber provide book in a range of musical levels and genres - Disney, Popular Hits, Favorites, Classics, Rock n Roll, Ragtime & Marches, Hymns, Kids’ Songs, Christmas, Music from China. Click on the Image below to select the Level that is right for your student.

Music Lessons

This might seem kind of obvious but giving the gift of music lessons. Pay for a year’s tuition. I’ve never met an adult who wished they HADN’T taken piano lessons. I only ever hear regret that they didn’t start or continue with lessons.

Musical Instrument

The gift of a musical instrument is a powerful and impactful present. And while I think everyone should have a piano in their home, I completely understand that it might not be feasible for your season of life.

For young children, invest in xylophones, shaky eggs, hand drums.

Upon starting elementary school, children often start piano lesson. Most parents want to try out lessons for a little while before investing in something as big as a piano. But in order for a child to truly discover a love for piano, they need to be able to play and practice a piano at home to make progress at lessons. Catch 22? Not necessarily. Instead of buying a piano (or getting a free one from FB marketplace), why not try a keyboard. Young beginners could use a 61 key keyboard, just make sure it can be set up in a spot that will foster proper piano posture. A great option that is affordable, doesn’t take up a lot of space, and promotes appropriate posture is a keyboard with a bench like this 61 Keyboard with a Bench. If you have a serious piano student and are ready to make a bigger investment but don’t have the space for an “actual” piano - you could try a full 88 key digital piano. They are slightly smaller and definitely weigh less. They also provide options for plugging in headphones, recording, and playing around with different sounds and tones.

And if you still need a little more convincing on the impact of a musical instrument, check out this video…

For Elementary and Middle School Students (even High Schooler’s can participate) - do a Composer Study. Learn about 22 different composers ranging from the Middle Ages up to Modern Times through their music, food, stories, and history. These studies would be great on a cold winter day - cuddle up under a blanket to read a story about the composer while eating food from the composer’s country and listening to the composer’s music in the background. So educational, so snuggly, so fun! You can purchase the entire 22 week bundle or pick and choose an individual composer(s).

Johann Sebestian Bach

Enjoy some German Pferrneusse cookies while listening to Minuet in G.

Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart

Cuddle up with some Linzer Tortes and a Little Night Music.

Ludwig Von Beethoven

Chow down on Mac & Cheese while rocking out to the 5th Symphony.

Music Games

Games are a great gift - they are relational, great for snowy and cold winter days, AND they can be educational! Two of my favorite music related games are Composer Bingo and Spot It.

With Composer Bingo - download the bingo cards (to make them last longer, I put them in page protectors), use bingo markers (chocolate chips or M&M’s make GREAT bingo markers that kids will enjoy eating after the game), and click on the You Tube Playlist Link. Set the list on Shuffle or have one person designated to select the songs. Play the song, figure out the composer, and mark it off!

Fun for the Whole Family!

Spot It - this Musical Version of Spot It is super fun and a great way for any level of music student to play. They are just matching music symbols (but you can always use the game to review concepts with the student). My piano students LOVE to play this game and they often request it when we have an extra few minutes at the end of a lesson.
