Composer Study - Peter Abelard

Peter Abelard

"The master key of knowledge is, indeed, a persistent and frequent questioning."

Peter Abelard was a French composer, poet, and philosopher from the medieval period. Abelard's contributions include the insanity defense in law and the concept of limbo in Catholic theology. (He created quite the scandal with his love affair with his brilliant student, Heloise. He wrote several poems and hymns inspired by his doomed love for Heloise.) One of his few surviving hymns, O quanta qualia, was written for his wife, Heloise's religious community, where she lived in hiding as a nun to keep safe from Abelard's disapproving uncle.
